What Is Causing My Headaches?

Everyone experiences headaches from time to time, and many people experience them regularly. Some headaches can be caused by stress or diet, while others could have a more serious underlying medical condition. There are three main types of headaches:

  • Tension Headaches – Tension headaches result from muscle tension and are characterized by tightness or pressure in the neck and head and dull pain. These headaches may last less than an hour or up to a few days. Some common triggers for tension headaches include emotional or physical stress, fatigue, dehydration, hunger, overexertion, neck or back problems, and jaw clenching.
  • Migraines – Migraines result in moderate to severe throbbing pain on one side of your head. A migraine headache can last for a few hours up to a few days or longer. Migraines are associated with light and sound sensitivity and nausea, and vomiting. While the underlying cause of migraines is unknown, they can be triggered by stress, dehydration or hunger, certain foods or medications, loud noise, menstruation, or disruption in your sleep patterns.
  • Cluster Headaches – Cluster headaches can be excruciating, with pain occurring around or behind the eye on one side. These headaches can last for weeks or months at a time. The causes of cluster headaches are unknown and usually aren’t triggered by outside factors like stress or food.

If your headaches are becoming more frequent and severe, it’s best to visit a neurologist for prompt diagnosis and treatment. A neurologist is a doctor that specializes in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions, including headaches. They can perform various tests to assess the causes and severity of the headache. These tests may include the following:

  • Physical Examination
  • Brain Imaging Scans
  • Blood tests
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Treatment options for headaches can depend on the cause, but common treatments include medications and lifestyle changes such as stress reduction, improved sleep habits, physical activity, and diet. Our experts at Nassau Suffolk Neurology will help identify your headache triggers and help you find the best ways to manage your condition.
