Sensory evoked potentials (SEP) tests the electrical activity in the brain. The goal is to see the feedback of stimulation of sight, sound, or touch. One of the tests that are apart of the sensory evoked potentials is the VER (Visual Evoked Response) Test. The test has the capability to diagnose problems with your nerves that affect your sight. The way the actual test is done consists of a professional physician placing electrodes on your scalp to record the electric signals your brain processes while you watch a checkerboard pattern flash for a few minutes. How Do You Prepare? 

There may be a couple of things you might want to know before going into a VER Test. Some things you should do to prepare for the VER Test are:

  • You will sign a consent form before you take the test.
  • Fasting is NOT required before your VER Test.
  • Know what medications you take. Your physician will ask what they are before you are tested.
  • It is suggested that you wash your hair the night before. Do not use any hairspray or hair products on the day of the test.
  • Other preparations may be necessary depending on the patient. Talk to your doctor before coming into the test.

What Occurs During the Test? 

The procedure of the test can vary depending on the patient. You should speak to your physician about what to expect during the test, however, some things you should expect before the VER Test are:

  • Removing clothing, jewelry, glasses, or anything metal that can interfere with the test.
  • You will lie down in a bed.
  • A physician will attach the electrodes which will be placed around your skull.

Here are some things that occur during the actual test:

  • You will sit a few feet away from a screen.
  • The physician will place electrodes around the skull. The electrodes are able to interpret your visual stimuli.
  • Your attention will be focused on the center on your screen.
  • You will be told to close one eye at a time while the screen shows a checkerboard pattern.
